Just got back last night from a three week trip to visit Fiona’s family in Australia. Since this was my third time there, I didn’t feel like I was under pressure to do a lot of sightseeing so I had a super-relaxing time hanging out with everyone. The highlight was definitely meeting our two-year old niece, Lili. She is a ton of fun - one of the happiest kids I’ve ever seen.
Here’s a first batch of photos that I’ve pushed up. Hopefully I’ll get around to posting more later, but no promises ;)

None. None more awesome:
HEBRON, CT (NBC) — It may have seemed like an emergency at the time, but a Connecticut man is now regretting his call to 911.
35-year-old Brian Poulin of Hebron was arrested Sunday after police said he called 911 several times and asked them to bring him beer.
Hebron was charged with disorderly conduct.
Police said he called 911 numerous times and told the dispatcher he was out of beer and asked them to pick up more for him.
Poulin was transported to Windham Community Memorial Hospital after officers arrested him at his home.
Police did not say what he was treated for.
He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Rockville on Nov. 20.

Here’s a collection of cartoons from Bill Watterson’s (Calvin & Hobbes) early years as a cartoonist at Kenyon College. Not as funny as the C&H stuff, but an interesting look into one of everybody’s favorite comic artists.

For those of you keeping up at home, KPBS is updating this map every 5 to 15 minutes with the latest information on the spread of the fire. It appears to be one of the most up-to-date and includes lots of information about evacuation alerts and evacuation centers. It also shows burn zones drawn on the map.

Not a whole lot of time for a proper update right now, but I just wanted to take a moment to gloat about the fact that we\’re on our way to Chicago to be on Oprah!
Of course, when I say “we” I mean Kiva. Fiona and I probably won’t actually be appearing on TV, but still - pretty sweet! And the best part is that we’ll be on the same show as Bill Clinton. Yeah, that’s right - Fiona’s going to be chilling in the Green Room with the Big Dog. Hopefully the wacky cigar antics will be kept to a minimum, but I told her not to wear any blue dresses just in case.
Bubba’s going to be talking about “Giving”, his new book on philanthropy and civic action (AP). The show will be airing on September 4, so get your Tivo fingers ready.
Also, this Friday Kiva’s going to have a segment on the Today show which should be pretty cool as well. Don’t miss that shit either.

Holy deep hole, Batman:
The average U.S. household owes $9,658 on its credit cards. Sixty percent of Americans have been in credit card debt for more than one year.
And my favorite: Americans owe $850 billion in credit card debt. The world’s 54 poorest countries owe $412 billion in foreign debt.
When I was growing up I had the phrase “don’t buy what you can’t afford” hammered into me on a regular basis. I never saw my parents put anything on a credit card. As far as I know, they didn’t even have any. When my Dad bought a new car in 1987 he and my mom made a big deal about the fact that they paid cash for it. I was 11, and I remember thinking “How else could you pay for it, duh”.
It’s surprising to me that people could manage to get themselves into such deep holes. Granted, there are those out there who probably have staggering credit card debt due to legitimate crises like health catastrophes or category 5 hurricanes. However, I find it pretty hard to believe that every household in America (on average) has been dealing with disaster. Unless you consider not having a big enough flat-screen TV a disaster. Which I guess I don’t.
